Focus on improving student pass percentage in social welfare hostels

The Collector was disappointed with the results despite various measures being taken up to improve pass percentage in welfare hostels in the district represented by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. In order to overcome the deteriorating standards, the Collector has taken number of innovative measures for improving the quality of education in the social welfare hostels.

Instructions were given to all the district officials to visit the social welfare hostels and spend a night with the students to know practical difficulties of students, who will be appearing for the SSC exams. Along with the Collector, Joint Collector N Bharath Gupta, Tirupati Municipal Commissioner Vinay Chand and other district officials have slept in various social welfare hostels to know the problems of students.

They have submitted a report to the Collector over the functioning of the hostels and the steps to be taken for improving the pass percentage in SSC exams. After analysing the report, the Collector has evolved a strategy to improve the educational standards in the social welfare hostels.

It may be mentioned here that the State government has given an order in 1997 to provide Rs 1,000 worth of sports kits and the same amount of books to each social welfare hostel for the benefit of hostel students. But, the GO was ignored during the last 15 years in the district.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, Joint Director of Social Welfare Vijaya Kumar said that the Collector has decided to revamp the social welfare hostels to provide bright future for the students belonging to Scheduled Castes. “It has been decided to provide sports kits and books to all the social welfare hostels at the earliest.

Kumar said that the Collector has instructed planting of saplings in the premises of social welfare hostels in order to create an ambience of homely atmosphere. The Joint Director said that the digging of soak pits would be taken up in all the welfare hostels. Digital literacy would be promoted besides initiating remedial foundation coaching in the social welfare hostels. The Collector is interested in promoting tournaments among social welfare hostels to encourage students for taking part in sports.
