Visakhapatnam: A major fire broke at Biomax Fuels Limited (BFL), a bio-diesel manufacturing unit in the Visakhapatnam Special Economic Zone (VSEZ), in here on Tuesday night.

The incident triggered panic among the residents of the area and workers of the VSEZ. However, no casualties or injuries were reported as the fire occurred in the storage area. No workers were present in close proximity of the fire.

Biomax Fuels Limited has a manufacturing capacity of 5 lakh tonnes of bio-diesel from multi feedstock at VSEZ in the city.
District Fire Officer J Mohan Rao said that there were about 15 storage tanks and the fire had spread to the 11 storage tanks resulting in huge flames reaching a height of more than 30 feet.

Sources said that eight fire engines reached the spot and two fire engines with chemical foam were requisitioned from HPCL and Eastern Naval Command to put off the fire.

The fire service personnel are yet to ascertain the reason for the massive fire and said fire spread from one tank to another tank in minutes. Raging flames made it tough for fire tenders to reach the storage area.

District Collector Dr N Yuvaraj along with a few others rushed the spot and is supervising the operations. Local residents complain that industrial accidents in and around Vizag have been causing sleepless nights as majority of the industries in the region have been giving least priority to fire safety measures in the hazardous industries.
