Hyderabad: In a strategic move, senior Congress leader and MP KVP Ramachandra Rao on Tuesday requested AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to support the private members bill moved by him for special status to Andhra Pradesh. The bill will be put to vote in the Rajya Sabha on May 15.
In a letter to Naidu, the Congress leader said he introduced the private bill on July 31, 2015 demanding that the Union government fulfill all the promises made to AP during the bifurcation of the state.
The issue has come up for discussion in the House on April 29 but the Upper House was adjourned due to lack of quorum after Union Minister of State for Home Haribhai Chaudary said that the Centre was not inclined to accord special status to AP which triggered political storm in the state.
He urged the Chief Minister to instruct all his party MPs to be present in the House during the debate and extend unilateral support to his bill in the interest of AP people.
Apart from the grant of special status to AP for 10 years, the bill also demands to provide special economic package to the State which is under debt trap and financial crisis following the unscientific division of state.
Central assistance for the construction of new capital city, Vizag railway zone, international airports at Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam, establishment of petro- chemical refinery and special high court in AP are included in the bill.
The Congress leader urged Naidu to seek the support of other political partners in the BJP-led NDA government in support of the bill.
