Pithapuram (East Godavari): In the wake of spate of ryot suicides in the State due to crop failure, three young farmers have practically demonstrated that higher yield in the prevailing drought conditions can be achieved through adoption of modern farming methods. The success of the progressive farmers will certainly spur the farming community to develop confidence and positive attitude to overcome losses in agriculture.

V Veerababu, AVG Prasad and S Prasanna Kumar are raising horticulture and vegetable crops in 18 acres at Chinna Jaggampeta village in Gollaprolu mandal. Mulching sheets, yellow trappers, pheromone traps, drip irrigation and fertigation system are some of the innovative methods adopted by the trio to achieve higher yield.

Speaking to The Hans India, the progressive farmers who are good friends, said, “The new methods of agriculture are more beneficial to farmers to reap a good harvest despite the vagaries of nature. The pest attack can be combated effectively. The available limited irrigation water can be used in an optimum manner. The cultivation costs can also be brought down by reducing the use of fertilisers and pesticides.” Reduction in cultivation costs means higher profits, they added.

Narrating their successful experiments, the trio said, “We are cultivating 18 acres of land with water from two borewells in an upland area. We adopted the drip irrigation method in our fields. Pipelines up to a length of 3,300 to 3,500 metres per acre are laid in our fields to supply water to all the plants.” “Thus, we achieved optimum utilisation of water. Our fields are getting adequate irrigation water even in summer,” they added.

Highlighting the fertigation system, the young farmers said, “Fertilisers and pesticides can be directly administered to plants using the new method. In the process, excess use and wastage of fertilisers and pesticides can be checked. It also ensures speedy growth of plants. The crop comes to harvest as per the gestation period.” They said that their aim is to motivate youngsters and educate the youth to take up agriculture by proving that it is more profitable.
