Chittoor: A water vending machine set up by Srinivasa Trust here has been providing 50 litres of drinking water per day to residents of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar Colony and its neighbouring localities for the past two months while the city is reeling under acute water shortage. The Chittoor MLA D K Satyaprabha owns the Srinivasa Trust.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had inaugurated the mineral water plant-cum-vending machine at Kongareddy Palli on December 11, 2014. Due to technical glitches, water plant has commenced functioning two months ago.

The vending machine attached to water plant releases water on insertion of ATM card only. The trust has issued ATM cards for the residents by collecting Rs 100 per each card. Water vending machine releases 50 litres of drinking water on pressing yellow button after insertion of a card. A resident can use ATM card only once in a day and card validity is for one month. Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, Devarajulu Naidu, a resident of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar Colony, said that he recharges his card every month by paying Rs 100 in which Rs 40 collected towards maintenance of water plant.

“I can use my ATM card at my convenient time for getting water, that too, for lesser price,” he added. He said that residents are happy with the vending machine as they are getting hassle-free drinking water. It is opined that MLA Satyaprabha should take measures for setting up water vending machines in all divisions of the city as private water tankers are selling water to residents on commercial terms.
