Addressing a meeting at Brahmaiah Lingam tank at Chikkavaram village in Gannavaram mandal of Krishna district as part of Neeru-Pragathi programme on Friday, the Chief Minister said that as there is no water in Krishna river this year as both the AP and TS were forced to share 60 tmcft of water.

The Chief Minister said that 80 tmcft of flood water from Godavari would be diverted to Krishna delta through Pattiseema and Polavaram right main canal in June.

Stating that the silt percolated in the Brahmaiah Lingam Tank would be removed, he sanctioned a lift irrigation project with Rs 5 crore to divert Godavari water to the tank to meet drinking water and irrigation requirements in Gannavaram mandal. He appealed to the farmers to conserve water through farm ponds and water harvesting pits.

Naidu said that the district received 1,000 mm rain fall and calls upon people to concentrate on water conservation. He said that the government would extend financial assistance for digging farm ponds and appealed to farmers to utilize the opportunity to conserve water to save their crops.

He said that at the time of crisis 8 tmcft of water was diverted through Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Scheme to save crops worth Rs 2,400 crore in Krishna delta.

Earlier, welcoming the gathering Gannavaram MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsimohan said that the Brahmaiah Lingam Tank is a life line for 16 villages. Minister for Water Resources Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, Minister for Agriculture Prathipati Pulla Rao, Machilipatnam MP K Narayana and others were present.

Meanwhile, prior to the Chief Minster’s arrival at the venue, the police noticed the presence of farmers, who are opposing Eluru canal diversion. They sprung in to action and evacuated the farmers from the meeting venue fearing protests in presence of Chief Minister.
