Rajamahendravaram: City MLA Dr Akula Satyanaryana and Municipal Commissioner V Vijayaramaraju launched Swachh Rajamahendravaram here on Saturday to keep the city clean and disease-free. The MLA and the Municipal Commissioner have inaugurated a coconut breaking machine.

Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that both private and government sectors are spending a whopping sum of Rs 4,52,000 crore on preventable diseases per annum worldwide. He said that prevalence of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya is high in Rajamahendravaram. He asked the residents of the city to vow to maintain neatness in the city. He appealed to people to use double dustbin system to dispose wet and dry waste from their houses.

The MLA said, “Swachh Rajamahendravaram is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat and under this programme, we are creating awareness among people about segregation of solid and wet waste disposal.” “Unless we make segregation at source simple and scalable, it cannot be sustained,” he added.

The MLA explained that every household should segregate solid and wet waste and deposit the waste in a cloth cover. He said 45 volunteers with the support of municipal sanitary workers will collect the solid waste from apartments and houses and added that for every kg of waste, the Swachh Rajamahendravaram Trust (SRT) will pay Rs 3 to the house owners.

The Municipal Commissioner said that the initiative will give a new dimension to the ongoing Swachh Bharat campaign in Rajamahendravaram and Municipal Corporation of Rajamahendravaram (MCR) is ready to support the initiative by all means. Meanwhile, Andhra Kesari Yuvajana Samithi offered Rs 10,000 to the SRT, followed by Ramdas Paper Boards announcing Rs 20,000 and Balakavi Educational Seva Trust announcing Rs 25,000.
