Anantapur: Zilla Parishad (ZP) general body meeting unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday demanding the Central government to honour its commitment to the State on the issue of conferring special status. The general body also passed another resolution urging the Centre to distribute the funds being awarded directly to panchayats in the ratio of 50 per cent to panchayats, 30 per cent to mandal parishads and 20 per cent to zilla parishads, instead of directly sending all the funds to the gram panchayats. The resolution was moved when several ZPTC members felt that the three tier system of panchayats, mandals and ZP should be followed by proportionate distribution of funds to it as in the past.

The general body meeting which held under the chairmanship of Chaman Saab has discussed drinking water shortage, individual latrines construction, construction of 1 lakh farm ponds through DWMA's Panta Sanjeevani project and also the progress of Handri-Neeva project.

Addressing the meeting, IT and Information Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy assured the members that top priority is being given by the State government to ensure drinking water to the last village in the district.

The government has sanctioned Rs 26 crore for the purpose so far. Rs 6.50 crore is given for deepening of borewells, flushing and supply of water through water tankers to all problem villages and localities. Also Rs 10 crore was released for transport charges to contractors. Rs 9 crore was released for repairs of defunct bores. The minister said that Handri-Neeva project is being completed on a mission mode. The project would help recharge ground water resources and for filling all village and irrigation tanks and recharge all bores and check dams.

It is the Chief Minister's vision to bring up the ground water table anywhere from 5 to 8 metres. Raghunatha Reddy lauded the Collector and DWMA officials for doing a good job with regard to digging of 1 lakh farm ponds in the district while the entire country's target is digging 8 lakh farm ponds. 2 lakh soaking pits also should be completed in the district. All these measures would help district to come out the quagmire of drought conditions in the district.

On the measures taken with regard to supply of seed for groundnut farmers for kharif crop in the district, the Minister said that 2.10 lakh quintals of seed have been kept ready out of a total requirement of 3.90 lakh quintals. Similarly 20,000 quintals of pulses and millets seeds have been kept ready for disbursal to farmers for cultivating inter-crops. 1.80 lakh quintals of fertilisers also are kept ready for distribution.

District Collector Kona Sasidhar assured members to clear all Swachh Bharat dues under the individual latrines scheme. He asked members to guide people to apply for input subsidy if they have not been credited the same in their accounts by submitting a copy of Aadhaar card.

The Minister and the Collector honored merit students of Polycet Jayaprakash Reddy, Sivasai Teja and Karishma on the occasion. The general body also felicitated the Collector for receiving the Prime Minister's Award under Swachh Vidyalaya programme.
