Vijayawada: The Bharatiya Khet Mazdoor Union (BKMU) affiliated to Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Labourers’ Union here on Thursday, alleged that the State government had diverted over Rs 1,958 crore from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) to the Neeru-Chettu programme.

The BKMU Andhra Pradesh general secretary and former MLC Jelli Wilson said that people were suffering due to the severe drought situation. He said that the State government was engaging machines instead of men. He further alleged that the ruling party leaders have become contractors in every village and were eating major portion of the funds.

He said the ruling party leaders have also increased the material component funds and regretted that the government has totally ignored the welfare of the agriculture workers.

Wilson wanted the government to drop machines from the NREGS works and provide shelter and buttermilk for the workers at the workplace. He further wanted the government to provide 200 man-days for every family and enhance the daily wage to Rs 300 a person.

The BKMU leader appealed to the agriculture labourers across the State to stage protests in their respective places on May 16 to mount pressure on the government to tackle drought.

He also wanted the workers to pressurise the government to increase the wages and provide summer allowance for the workers.
