157th birth anniversary of Lady of the Lamp celebrated at KGH and VIMS

Visakhapatnam: The 157th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale was celebrated at the King George Hospital and Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences on a grand scale here on Thursday under the aegis of Government Nurses’ Welfare Association.
At a programme organised at the King George Hospital, MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju paid rich tributes to Florence Nightingale by garlanding her portrait and called upon the nursing staff to imbibe the most valuable virtue of Nightingale- ‘nursing the needy’ with proper care.
Stating that the nursing is the most valuable and important service among all professions, the MLA asked the nursing staff to mingle with the patients with affection as they come from far off places to undergo treatment. Recalling the service rendered by Nightingale, he said that she used to visit the patients even during the night holding a lamp and that was why she was being called as Lady of the Lamp. Hospital superintendent Dr M Madhusudana Babu, deputy superintendent Dr K Satyavara Prasad, CS RMO Dr K S L G Sastry, ARMO Dr B Bangaraiah, nursing superintendent Shyamalatha and nursing superintendent Grade-1 Jyothi, B Bhagya Lakshmi of AP Government Nurses’ Association and others participated.
The birth anniversary of Lady of the Lamp Florence Nightingale was also celebrated at the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS) on Thursday as the International Nurses’ Day in which doctors, head nurses, staff nurses, paramedical staff and administrative staff took part.
Officer on Special Duty, VIMS Dr P V Sudhakar has called upon the nursing staff to take inspiration from the Lady of the Lamp to help secure a good name to the institution. Since the nursing is a noble profession, he asked the entire nursing staff to rededicate themselves to the service of the poor. Dr B S Chakravarthy, Dr K Kurmanadh, head nurses U Lakshmi Kumari, M K Shyamala,
P Vijayaleela Grace, J S N Jagadamba and G Seetha Devi and other staff were present.
