Vizianagaram: The district administration seems determined to unsettle the family members of Mahakavi Gurajada Apparao, after taking over the land adjacent to his residence and failing to provide an alternative site to the family. The decision of the municipal council to reject the proposal to allot land to the family has become a hot topic of discussion.

As a result, there is no land to construct a memorial for Gurajada, whose house was taken over by the Archaeology department on May 23, 2015. Later, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had announced that a suitable memorial for the eminent writer will be built. The issue arose when Gurajada’s great-grandson Venkata Prasad and four other heirs gave their land adjacent to the house to a builder for development in 2013, with a request that a flat be allotted to them.

Permission was denied to the building as any construction activity is banned near the Gurajada house. Following this, the family members represented to Naidu, who offered to allow suitable land elsewhere. Following government orders, Tahsildar Srinivasa Rao proposed land in Santhapeta ward to Collector M M Naik.

The Collector wrote to the Municipal Administration Principal Secretary who communicated to the Vizianagaram municipality on the land allotment. However, the council rejected the proposal. This shocked the family members and residents of the district, said Indira, great-granddaughter of Gurajada, speaking to The Hans India.

Several literary and people’s organisations are angry with the decision of the municipal council, viewing it as an insult to the writer. They are upset that people’s representatives have not realised the importance of Gurajada. The Gurajada Samskrutika Samakhya at a meeting in the Gurajada house resolved that the land should be allotted to the family within a month and work for the memorial should be started immediately.

Otherwise, it threatened to launch an agitation. However, Municipal Chairman P Ramakrishna promised to allot the land within two to three months. Or as an alternative, he said the family could take possession of the land meant for the municipal guest house, on which there is no resolution in the civic body. But yet the officials say that a resolution has been passed. This is a clear case of negligence by the Municipal and Revenue officials.
