Nellore: Residents living in slums and posh localities are facing stray dog menace. People are scared to venture out of their houses after 11 pm fearing that they may be bitten by dogs. Denizens are expressing anger over officials of the Nellore Municipal Corporation for not taking measures to protect them from stray dog attacks by catching them periodically.

The problem will aggravate during the breeding season, they said. In most of the cases, children have become victims of stray dog attacks. Incidents of dog bites were reported on streets either side of Podalakur Road, Padmavathi Centre, ZP Colony, SP Bungalow Centre, Badwadipalem, Mulapet, Ranganayakulapet, Venkateswara Puram, Venkatareddy Nagar, Vedayapalem railway station, Jyothinagar, BV Nagar and other localities where middle-class population resides.

Packs of dogs strolling in residential colonies are attacking employees and workers, who are returning to their houses in late hours. One has to carry a stick or any other weapon to frighten them. “I used to shuttle between Chittoor and Nellore on a job purpose a couple of years ago and faced horrifying experience from stray dogs while returning home during midnights.

I used to get rid of dogs with a stick whenever they tried to attack me. The problem still exists as guests are scared to visit my house after 10 pm,” said SV Mallikarjuna, a senior manager of a nationalised bank, who is residing in an apartment at Padmavathi Centre. The situation is rampant in Venkateswarapuram and Janardhan Reddy Colony where dogs have attacked children.

“Animal protection groups are preventing civic bodies from catching dogs. They are minting money in the guise of animal welfare,” said V Venkateswara Rao, a teacher from Balajinagar. He said that animal protection bodies should be made responsible if any person dies with rabies. He advised these groups to cooperate with civic officials.

More than 1,000 dog bite cases were reported in government hospitals every month across the district. Atmakur, Sullurpet, Naidupet, Kavali and Seetharamapuram and other Mandal are also witnessing dog bite cases. Further, a senior Corpo- ration official admitted that they have not taken up sterilisation of stray dogs for some time and it would start shortly.
