Visakhapatnam: A captain from merchant navy was among four persons who died on the spot when the car in which they were travelling crashed head on with a coal-laden lorry coming in the opposite direction on the National Highway near Kotturu-Narsingaraopeta under Anakapalle rural police station around midnight on Friday.

The dead were identified as merchant navy captain Ch Rammohan Rao (45), P Premsai (42) and his father-in-lay K Mutyalu (62) and T Raja Rao (40), all residents of the city. Premsai is a native of Seethammadhara area in the city and deals with auto-mobile spares.

The police said the accident occurred in between 12.15 and 12.40 am on Saturday when the four were returning to Visakhapatnam from Eluru after attending a marriage. They were travelling in Hyundai i20 car. The police said that the car, speeding at 120 kmph hit a lorry that was coming on the wrong direction on the Right Lane of the NH-16. It was dark on the road and all four died of severe head injuries DSP (Anakapalle) A Purosotham said that the car was travelling at a speed of 120 kmph and Rammohan Rao, who was driving the car, failed to control the vehicle. The impact of the accident was so strong that the car was reduced to an iron mangle.

Inspector of Anakapalle Rural Police Station KNSV Prasad said that Premsai was native of Eluru and settled in Vizag around a decade back. Premsai and Mutyalu had gone to Eluru a few days back and met Rammohan Rao and Raja Rao in a marriage at Eluru. The police shifted the bodies to Government Hospital, Anakapalle for conducting post mortem.
