Woman Maoist, 3 others held
The Maoist militia members were active in Vizag Agency and involved in several incidents of loot, attack on houses of local leaders, extortion, pasting the Maoists’ posters and informing the police activities to the Maoists.
Visakhapatnam: The rural police of Visakhapatnam arrested a woman Maoist (Area Committee Member), who was carrying a reward of Rs 4 lakh on her head and three armed Maoist militia members, each carrying Rs one lakh reward, in the agency on Monday.
The arrested were Vantala Vasantha (26) alias Jyothi, native of Bonangipalle area under GK Veedhi mandal and the militia members P Sattibabu (40), P Kameswara Rao (21) from Koyyuru mandal and G Govinda Rao (26) from GK Veedhi area in the Agency.
Giving details of the arrests, the newly-appointed Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma said Vasantha has been associated with the CPI Maoist party since 2003 and was involved in 51 offences committed in the Agency, including 15 murder cases, exchange of fire incidents between the cops and rebels, involved in the famine raids and other offenses.
Vasantha was the ACM of East Visakha Joint Division and also worked in Andhra Odisha Border (AOB). The SP said Vasantha decided to abandon her squad due to severe gynaecological problem, but she was forced to continue in the outfit as the Maoist top guns refused her decision.
The Maoist militia members were active in Vizag Agency and involved in several incidents of loot, attack on houses of local leaders, extortion, pasting the Maoists’ posters and informing the police activities to the Maoists. The special police teams have been monitoring the activities of the four ultras for past few months and arrested them at four places in the agency, the SP said.
Replying a question on the ongoing works of Armed Outposts (AOPs) at Rallagedda (Korukonda area under Chintapalle) and few other places in Vizag Agency, Rahul said that the AOP at Rallagedda would be ready in few days and it was planned to have more posts in a few places in the agency to curb the Maoist activities.
The SP said the State home ministry has requested the Union Home Ministry to sanction of Rs 22 crore funds in the fiscal year 2016-17 under Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme to set up the AOPs in Vizag and its neighbouring Maoist-affected districts.
