Srikakulam: Solar power brought light into lives of tribes of three hamlets of Budarisingi grama panchayat in Mandasa mandal of Srikakulam district. Under the Deeen Dayal Upadhaya Gram Jyothi Yojana (DUGJY) and Rural electrification scheme (RES) Central and state governments jointly electrifying remote villages and hamlets in agency areas.

As part of the DUGJY and RES solar power provided for 39 tribe families in three hamlets, Peddapadmapuram, Lalithapuram and Madiyakula in Mandasa mandal. State government entered into an agreement through AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) with private power company Hinduja and arranged solar panels and electricity equipment in the hamlets.

Street lights, one bulb and fan were givento each house in the tribal hamlets. In all the three hamlets a total of 306 people are residing in 39 houses. ‘As part of 100 per cent electrification under the schemes we have identified 30, 080 non-electrified houses across the district in the agency and remote areas, of it 28,168 houses have been electrified and remaining 1,912 houses will be electrified soon,’ APEPDCL Superintendent Engineer G Sharath Kumar told The Hans India.

‘We are surprised with solar power and brightness of the light in our houses which will help us to perform work in the evenings and help for our children in studies’ Savara Jyothi, Savara Vijaya and Savara Kurmadu of Peddapadmapuram and Lalithapuram expressed their happiness. ‘Up to five years the beneficiary families need not pay any power bills and Hinduja company will have to maintain it till the end agreement period and we are collecting consumption units every month to know usage of power’ said APEPDCL Assistant Engineer of Mandasa mandal, M Surya Rao.

‘Previously we made all efforts to provide power to these hamlets but due to topographical hurdles it was not realised and now dreams of these tribals has come true with solar power’ explained Budarisingi grama sarpanch, Suresh Panigrahi.
