Tirupati: In the wake of opposition onslaught and the BJP leaders’ claims that they were giving special treatment to Andhra Pradesh pending a final decision by the Prime Minister on the issue of special status, the TDP Mahanadu in a swift move passed a resolution demanding special status to the state and special package.

TDP national president N Chandrababu Naidu made it clear that there was no question of compromise on the issue of special status. He said he has been maintaining patience in the larger interest of the state. The Centre has given some funds but it has not extended the kind of help the residuary state should have got.

The eleven states where special status was given are still not fully developed hence AP was demanding that along with special status, the Centre should give special package so that it grows faster. “Just special status will not be sufficient,” he said. The party chief said that helping the state and hand-holding was the responsibility of the Centre. He has been trying hard to get all the promises made in the AP State Reorganisation Act implemented, Naidu said.

Introducing the resolution on special status, chief whip and party senior leader Kalva Srinivasulu said that the onus of helping the state of Andhra Pradesh and fulfilling all promises was on the Centre. If the Modi government gives special status, in three years the state will create wonders and in 10 years it will be the top most state in the country. He said the Mahanadu demands that the Centre give special status to the state and also liberal funds for construction of capital city.

He said the government was seriously pursuing the issue of special status and the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had met Prime Minister Naredra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitely 18 times during the last two years. He had made fervent appeal several times to the NDA Government to fulfill all the provisions made in the AP Reorganization bill.

He also demanded that the Centre declare immediate assistance of Rs, 16,000 cr to the state but released only Rs 2,023 cr only. He said Mahanadu wants all the political parties to exert pressure on the NDA Government for getting special status. Since they were party to pass the AP State Reorganisation Bill they too have great responsibility in the matter, he added.

The resolution also demanded that the Central Government should take the responsibility for construction of Polavaram project. He cautioned the NDA Government not to underestimate the goodness of CM in the regard.
