Vijayawada: Guizhou Maritime Silk Road International Investment Corporation (GIIC), which had drawn designs for the development of Pushkara ghats in Vijayawada and also special design for the Vijayawada City Square, an entertainment and recreation zone to be developed at Swarajya Maidan in the heart of the city, will take up another task of studying the drinking water supply network in Vijayawada city.

Vijayawada Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian on Saturday held discussions with the representatives of GIIC on improvement of quality and quantity of drinking water supply in the city. The Commissioner has asked the GIIC representatives to study the system from collecting the water from Krishna river wells, purification, chlorination at Head Water Works, supply network and submit a detailed report to the VMC.

The Commissioner seems not satisfied with the existing drinking water supply network and system and decided to take the help of GIIC to enhance the quality and quantity of drinking water in the city.

Filtering and chlorination at Head Water Works and supply of drinking water through the reservoirs and pipelines is the most important work carried out by VMC. Drinking water is being supplied at different timings in different colonies in the city. Now, the VMC is shifting its attention to supply water 24x7 to cater to the needs of the people. So, it is taking the help of GIIC.

The Central Government is insisting on the fixing of water meters to the drinking water taps used by domestic and commercial consumers under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation of Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme in the city.

The Chinese company GIIC will also study the possibility of fixing water meters to the taps in the city. If it happens, the water bills of the consumers will increase in the city. So far, the proposals are in the initial stage. The Commissioner has asked the GIIC representatives to study the entire drinking water network and submit a report on it. He instructed the VMC officials to furnish the details to the GIIC to complete the task.
