Drunk driving cases are on the rise in Srikakulam for the last five years. The rise in the number of drunk driving cases was evident from police drive against drunk driving at all important junctions.  In addition to regular checking, the police officials are planning to hold a number of awareness camps with doctors and psychologists for drivers to bring change in their attitude.

In addition to regular checking, the police officials are planning to hold a number of awareness camps with doctors and psychologists for drivers to bring change in their attitude.

The drunk driving cases are causing fatal deaths. In 2012, only one case was booked and Rs 1,000 was collected towards fine. In 2013, total cases rose to 45 and a fine amount was Rs 44,500. In 2014, as many as 387 cases were booked and Rs 4,28,400 fine was collected. In 2015, total 7,555 cases were registered and the fine amount of Rs 70,74,200 was collected.

In 2016 (until May 23), 4,456 cases were booked. A fine of Rs 17,83,800 was realised from drunk drivers. Superintendent of Police J Brahma Reddy said that they were giving top priority to create awareness among private and government vehicle drivers by explaining problems of drunken driving.

Cases were also booked whenever required with an aim to prevent them from driving in the inebriated condition. Traffic DSP P Srinivasa Rao said that during vehicle check, they found that a number of drivers were driving vehicles under the influence of liquor. Half of the road accidents are caused by drunk driving. The total road accidents in 2012 were 989.

They were 1,158 in 2013, 1,120 in 2014 and 1,118 in 2015. In 2016 (until May), total accidents were 445 in the district. Psychology faculty member of B R Ambedkar University J L Sandhya Rani said drivers believe that consuming liquor would help them overcome pressure. But that was not true.

Government RIMS Hospital resident medical officer (RMO) B Ch Appala Naidu said nervous system including brain functioning would be affected due to liquor consumption. As a result, the driver automatically lost concentration while driving leading to accidents, he said.
