Visakhapatnam: A fact-finding team of Organisation for the Protection of Democratic Rights (OPDR) has alleged that the two Maoists Azad alias Gopal and Kamala were killed in cold blood and not in an encounter as alleged by the police. The encounter took place on May 4.

A release issued here on Monday said a six-member team visited Palasamudram in Koyyuru Mandal in the agency on May 28 and May 29 and spoke to several people in the villages, including a father of Azad, Lakshmana Rao. They said the Dalam members and some farmers belonging to Primitive Tribes Group were present at Lakshmana Metta area from May 1 onwards.

On May 4 at about 3 pm, the special armed police members reached the spot and opened fire on the Dalam members who were bathing in the canal. Azad and Kamala collapsed there and the police killed them later after subjecting them to severe torture. Some of the tribals also sustained bullet injuries.

The bodies were later shifted to Narsipatnam Hospital for postmortem. The OPDR team members demanded an inquiry into the encounter by a sitting judge of High Court and criminal proceedings against the police involved in the ‘staged’ encounter.
