Amaravati: The State government is planning to conduct prestigious elections for Guntur Municipal Corporation GMC in October this year. With an eye on the coming elections, the GMC has taken up comprehensive drinking water works at a cost of Rs 460 crore and roads development works at a cost of Rs 70 crore.

The GMC has already called tenders to lay the underground drainage at a cost of Rs 903.46 crore, and it will start underground drainage work. The comprehensive drinking water scheme is expected to be completed within two months. Roads and city beautification work will be completed before Krishna Pushkaralu.

After completion of roads and city beautification works and Krishna Pushkaralu, the government will announce GMC election.
Minister for Municipal Administration P Narayana has already announced that they will conduct direct election for the post of Mayor and government is gearing up to conduct GMC election within three months.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is searching for suitable candidate to field in the Guntur Mayor election. The GMC merged seven surrounding grama panchayats in the municipal corporation following orders of the government.

A petition was filed in the court on the wards bifurcation. Following this, the GMC election was postponed. The GMC will re-bifurcate the wards within two months. Following instructions of Election Commission, the GMC is updating the voters list.

An official in the GMC, on the condition of anonymity, said that they would complete the wards re-bifurcation within two months.
Minister Prattipati Pulla Rao, Guntur MP Galla Jayadev on Wednesday went to GMC office and reviewed development works taken up during the last years.

They are planning to explain development works taken up by the GMC during the two years and request the voters to vote in favour of Telugu Desam.

GMC Commissioner S Nagalakshmi explained the works taken by the GMC through power point presentation. She said the GMC has taken up road widening works at a cost of Rs 70 crore, city beautification works, comprehensive drinking water scheme and underground drainage works and steps to be taken to regulate the traffic.

Minister Prattipati Pulla Rao directed the officials to complete works taken up for Krishna Pushkaralu by July 7 and engage an agency to take up city beautification works in three Assembly constituencies come under GMC purview. He instructed them to replace street lights with LED bulbs and start underground drainage works as early as possible.

He also directed them to set up Traffic Advisory Committee to regulate traffic.
MP Galla Jayadev asked them to take steps to implement 24x7 drinking water scheme after completion of comprehensive drinking water scheme works and construct new office for GMC.
