​Eluru: West Godavari District Collector K Bhaskar has called upon the people to dig soak pits in houses to conserve water.
The Collector dug a soak pit on DCMS Compound on Thursday.

He was at District Cooperative Marketing Society (DCMS) to inaugurate generic medical shop. As the Collector used crowbar to start digging the pit DCMS Chairman Bhupathiraju Ravivarma joined him with a shovel.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that groundwater levels in the district had depleted abnormally and it was the duty of everybody to conserve rainwater by digging soak pits. He said the groundwater levels depleted to 19.3 meters in the district. During the present year it was aimed to dig 8 lakh soak pits in the district.

In view of the drastic situation, the Government had decided to take up the water conservation under Neeru-Chettu programme and plant saplings to control pollution. MLC Ramu Suryarao, DWMA Project Director Venkata Ramana and other officials also participated in the
programme.
