Chittoor: Opposition leaders unanimously protested the decision of the TDP government to take the Sakshi channel off air in Chittoor. They staged a dharna here at Gandhi statue on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, Chittoor CPI secretary Nagaraj described the move by the government as “highly objectionable”. He accused the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of trampling on the freedom of press guaranteed by the Constitution. He also pointed out that TDP founder and former chief minister N T Rama Rao had never resorted to such move.

While pointing out that it should be left to the discretion of viewer to judge whether or not Sakshi’s broadcast was right, he asserted that, however, the government had no right to stop the telecast of a channel.

“The Chief Minister should change his attitude in this regard and respect the freedom of press. He should withdraw his unilateral decision unconditionally forthwith,” he demanded, and added that the CPI high command would be informed about the situation in the State to take up the issue more vigorously.

Trying to tread cautiously on the matter, BJP leader G Haribabu Choudary pointed out that the BJP had never interfered on matters relating to media, suggesting that TDP should follow the same. He asked the Chief Minister to reconsider his decision on Sakshi channel.
