Visakhapatnam/Vizianagaram: Fishermen in their mechanised boats are all set to sail into Bay of Bengal after a 60-day fishing holiday which will conclude by late on Tuesday night. But as the weather conditions are adverse, only 700 mechanised boats will venture into the sea.

Andhra Pradesh coast has around 2,000 mechanised boats of which around 700 are located in Visakhapatnam fishing harbour, while another 700 in Kakinada and rest in Machilipatnam, Nizampatnam, Krishnapatnam and Vodarevu fishing harbours.

“Due to hot weather, the fish would remain in shallow waters and it’s difficult to catch, hence only half of the mechanised boats would sail,” said Andhra Pradesh Mechanised Boat Owners Welfare Association president P C Appa Rao.

He said each boat spends around Rs 2 lakh on a 15-day voyage for diesel, food, wages and other operational expenses. Till positive signs are not visible, not many would venture into the sea, he added.

However, hectic activity is seen in the fishing harbour with the boat owners taking up minor repairs to the boats, nets and storing ice. “Fishing holiday was observed all over the world as it is good for marine life.

The fish spawn, breed grow big that would eventually lead to rich harvest,’’ said scientist and in-charge of city-based Centre for Marine Fisheries Research Institute.

In Vizianagaram, fishermen from Pusapatirega and Bhogapuram mandals are gearing up to venture into the sea for fishing from Wednesday. Fishermen from these mandals undertook maintenance and painting of their boats during the ban period which began on April 15 and concluded on June 14.

The fishing ban was enhanced from 47 days to 60 days this year following a directive from the Centre for improved conservation of fish and other marine resources during their breeding season.
