Anantapur: Local MLA Vaikuntam Prabhakar Chowdary has called upon the citizens of the city to be part of his initiative for greening of the city. Every citizen must plant at least one tree in his or her house compund.

He revealed that when he was the Municipal Chairman, he planted hundreds of trees and the greenery seen now was the maiden efforts of those, who were part of the green mission then, he added.

Due to greenery in the city, the city has 3 degrees temperature lesser than Bengaluru. Neem, Mango and other shade giving trees were being planted in the city, he added.

Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunitha, Mayor M Swaroopa, Deputy Mayor Gampanna, District Collector Kona Sasidhar and SP Rajasekhar Babu have participated in tree plantation drive by planting saplings in Ramanagar on
either side of the main road.

The Collector congratulated both the MLA Prabhakar and Mayor Swaroopa for their joint initiative in the city greening project.

He said that an action plan to plant 1 crore trees in the next five years has been formulated.
While the norm of any city is existence of 33 per cent greenery, the city has only 10 per cent greenery which is far lesser than the green norm, the Collector said. Sunitha stressed on maintenance of the greenery and survival of planted trees.
