In Lal Bahadur Sastry street of Seetarampuram, some big trees are ready to fall at any time because indiscriminate digging of road margins by workers. 

Vijayawada: Hundreds of trees are falling to the ground in many parts of Vijayawada due to widening and development of roads. Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is widening and developing more than 70 roads and streets in Vijayawada city to ease the traffic problem.

In Lal Bahadur Sastry street of Seetarampuram, some big trees are ready to fall at any time because indiscriminate digging of road margins by workers.

The VMC is developing roads and strengthening the margins. As part of the works, the workers are using poclains to dig and lift the earth. As a result, the roots of the trees are getting damaged.

Consequently, the trees are falling to the ground after losing their base.Power supply was disrupted since 4 am on Sunday in some streets of Seetarampuram due to disconnecting power supply.

Some weak trees fell on the power lines disrupting the power supply. The electricity department staff restored the power supply at about 11 am. Not only Seetarampuram, but many areas in the city are facing the same problem. Big trees were uprooted for widening of road on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic road. The VMC has taken up the road widening works to ease the traffic problem. It will take many years to grow the new trees on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic road.

Trees may fall flat on Nehru road along the West booking railway station road due to widening of the road. A 100-year-old tree at Panja centre may fall down at any moment due to weakening of its base.

On Ryves canal bund along Sambamurthy road some big trees may fall due to indiscriminate use of machinery when some structures were demolished last month for construction of Rytu Bazaar. These trees were planted more than 20 years ago. Now, these trees can disappear due to damage caused to their roots.

Trees are also getting damaged due to strengthening of the road margins in many parts of the city. As part of the Krishna Pushkaralu works, the VMC is strengthening road margins and filling with earth and concrete mix.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Sankar criticised the VMC for not taking measures to protect the trees. He said the CPI had launched mega campaign to grow trees in the city.

Trees were also uprooted near Bishop Ajaraiah School due to widening of the road. Dozens of trees fell to the ground in Bhavanipuram and Vidyadharapuram due to widening of roads.
