Emergency remembered

Vijayawada: BJP city unit has felicitated four BJP leaders who were imprisoned during the Emergency imposed in India by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The city BJP president, Dr Dasam Umamaheswara Raju, and other leaders attended the event at the party office on Sunday. Four BJP leaders Dr M Ramarao, P Malakondaiah, Pasupulet Panduranga Swamy and Ch Anjaneyulu were felicitated on the occasion.

The leaders narrated the events of Emergency and termed those days as the black days in the history of India. They said the emergency continued 18 months beginning on June 26, 1997. They said the Congress government under the leadership of Indira Gandhi arrested lakhs of people and imprisoned them as part of the dictatorial rule, they said.
