Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday blamed the State government for neglecting the government educational institutions and promoting private institutions.
Addressing a press conference here, APCC senior leader and former Minister S Sailajanath came down heavily on Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for allowing the private schools and colleges to collect huge amount of fees from parents. He alleged that these schools and colleges were also not issuing bills for the amount collected by them. He said that the institutions were changing the concept of education from quality teaching to the air-conditioned classrooms and ranks.
He said that the Congress government in the past had established at least one university for every district across the undivided State. However, the present TDP government had neglected these universities and welcoming private universities by offering huge extent of lands besides tax exemptions. This would lead to defunct of the existing government universities and colleges in the State, he feared.
The former Minister also recalled the Congress government’s introduction of fee reimbursement scheme for students. He said that the present government was ignoring the fee reimbursement issue and the students were facing several difficulties due to non-payment of fee by the government.
He blamed the State government for handing over government and municipal schools to private institutions and feared that the government would slowly hand over these schools to the private institutions.
Sailajanath took strong exception to the government closing several welfare hostels in the name of opening residential schools and colleges.
He said that the State government had closed dozens of hostels but had opened only a few residential schools depriving educational opportunity to poor students from the SC, ST, BC and minorities. He asked the government to restore all the hostels that were closed and improve facilities there.
The former Minister said the NSUI, student wing of the Congress would take up these issues and fight for the rights of the students and stop privatisation of education.
