Vijayawada: It is the perfect time for taking up plantation drive on the main roads of the city. The city recorded 25.3 cm rainfall during the last one month from June 1 to July 1. The normal rainfall is only 11.6 cm for the same period. The city recorded 117 per cent excess rainfall this season compared to the normal rainfall.

But, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is not taking up plantation drive on the main roads of the city due to funds crunch. Saplings are not planted on the main roads of the city after road widening and laying of roads. The corporation is not installing tree guards to protect the saplings in the city.

Tree guards are very important to protect the saplings. Animals like cows, buffaloes, goats eat the plants when left without tree guards. Besides, personal care is very important to grow the plants.

Important roads like Visalandhra Road widening works are completed. Not a single sapling was planted on the road. Similarly, the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium road development works also completed. Saplings are not planted on the road. BRP road development works were completed in one town two months ago.

Not a single sapling was planted on the road to grow the trees.Keeping in view of Krishna Pushkaralu, the corporation has decided to widen and develop 46 roads at a cost of Rs 100 crore.

As part of the road development and road widening works, hundreds of trees in the city were axed. Even 20 year trees were axed. But, there are no efforts for growing trees along the main roads of the city.

Mayor Koneru Sridhar said that the civic body is not in a position to spend a huge amount on tree guards. As per the estimates, the city needs at least 5,000 tree guards for massive plantation along the roads.

The estimated cost of tree guards is Rs 50 lakh. The Mayor told the VMC Council on Thursday that the civic body is trying to seek help from the NGOs to get tree guards so that trees can be grown on the important roads in the city. He said funds crunch is the main reason for not installing the tree guards.

Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian has invited some NGOs and sought their cooperation for the installation of tree guards. He suggested to the NGOs to depict their logo on one side and use the VMC logo on the other side of the tree guards. But, there is no response from the NGOs in the city.

The NGOs seems not happy with the attitude of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation for mercilessly axing of trees for widening of roads and taking up development works. It is not know when trees will be planted along the roads after widening and development works completed.
