Based on the information from the smugglers arrested in May and June here, police nabbed two persons in Chennai including Ramesh alias Suresh of Poonamallee and Vishal of Perambur in Chennai city, who purchased red sanders logs from the smugglers and hid them in the godown owned by Sahul alias Bai alias Nazirudhin.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the SP said that the interrogation of Sardar Ramesh, who was arrested on May 31 for smuggling 67 red sanders logs which were seized from two luggage vans and also 220 CC Bajaj Pulse motorcycle led to the arrest of Vinayaka Reddy alias Loki Reddy of Ramireddygaripalli village under Pulicherla mandal. He was arrested on June 14.
Based on the information from Vinayaka Reddy, police seized four red sanders logs hidden under the bridge, near Srinivasa Mangapuram and also a150 Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle.
The further investigation in the case of Sardar Ramesh led the police to arrest two more, who are locals, invovled in red sanders smuggling including Anbu Jagan of Peddakapu Layout and Kadiyam Venkatesh at Korlagunta in the pilgrim city. A Bajaj motorcycle was also seized from the duo.
Based on the information from the arrested, police stepped up the investigation which ultimately saw them get a prized catch recovering huge stock of red sanders logs from the
Chennai godown, she explained.
In this connection SP said that a disturbing fact in the smuggling was locals lending support to smugglers by providing the
logistics support like food and shelter.
Citing the case of the arrested from the city here and also one more from Pulicherla in the district, she said that the support of locals was also one of the major reason for smuggling still continuing. She warned of severe punishment to whoever lending support to smugglers.
