Eluru: The district administration on Monday celebrated the 119th birth anniversary of revolutionary Alluri Sitarama Raju.
Collector K Bhaskar paid rich tributes to the freedom fighter after garlanding the statue of Alluri at the Collectorate here. While admiring the leadership quality of Sitarama Raju, he said the warrior was deep in love with the jungles and its people.

Joint Collector P Koteswara Rao, District Revenue officer K Prabhakar Rao, Irrigation SE Srinivasa Yadav and other officials also garlanded the statue of Alluri on the occasion. MLA Badeti Kota Ramarao (Bujji) garlanded the statue of Alluri at Jute Mill Centre here.

He said Rs 6 lakh was allotted to install bronze statues of Alluri and other national leaders on the Eluru-Krishna Canal bund to inspire the youth. Retired DSPs Bhagavan Raju and Bhaskara Rao, TDP leaders Kollepalli Raju, Municipal Corporation whip Gudavalli Srinivas, corporator Punukollu pardhasaradhi and others paid glowing tributes to Alluri.

MLC Ramu Surya Rao urged the State government to rename a new district after Alluri Sitarama Raju, since the plan to carve 10 new districts in residuary Andhra Pradesh is on the government agenda.

He garlanded the statue of Alluri at Jute Mill Centre. He informed that Alluri was born on July 4, 1897 at Pandrangi. His last rites, after being caught at Mampa and executed by the British at Rajendrapalem, were performed at KD Peta on May 7, 1924, he added.

Deputy Mayor Gudiwada Ramachandra Kishore, former Deputy Mayor Chode Venkata Ratnam, Sanitary Inspector Satyanarayana and others participated in the programme.

Endowments Minister P Manikyala Rao paid homage to Alluri by garlanding his portrait at an old age home in Padala village of Tadepalligudem rural mandal on Monday. Later, he distributed sarees to women inmates of old age home.
