Rajamahendravaram: The shortage of doctors has hit functioning of the 50-bed Kovvur Government Hospital which was constructed to cater to the needs of patients from several mandals like Kovvur, Tallapudi, Nidadavole, Chagallu, Polavaram, Gopalapuram Devarapalli and Dommeru in West Godavari

Though about 300 to 400 patients visit the hospital in outpatient department, there are only three doctors available and of the three, the general physician has been sent for training in scanning. There is no technical staff available for scanning though the hospital has a machine.

What is more worse is that though majority of the patients in this hospital are gynecology patients and orthopedic patients, there is neither a gynecologist nor an orthopedician and even the delivery cases were being handled by a general surgeon or an anesthetist.

Speaking to The Hans India, the doctors on Tuesday said that instead of doctors, the government has now appointed a dentist. They said due to lack of orthopedic doctor, trauma cases were being referred to Rajamahendravaram General Hospital.
The hospital receives more than 30 gynecology cases every month and most of the cases need surgery. Due to lack of a gynecologist, lone general surgeon in the hospital, M Rajesh has to attend to all gynaec cases and also perform operations. In addition, he also has to take care of medico legal cases, post mortems and general surgeries.

In-charge superintendent of the hospital as well as anesthesia doctor, Dr P Sudheer said that though they had drawn the attention of the government and the local MLA repeatedly so far, no action has been taken.

He said the aim of providing quality care to the common man has got severely hit by an acute shortage of doctors and specialists. He said the hospital urgently requires a gynecologist, a pediatrician and an orthopedic doctor.
