Tirupati: In an effort to check the menace of stray dogs in the pilgrim city, the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) has introduced geo-tagging of the stray dogs for taking up the sterilisation in a foolproof manner to prevent the dogs’ population from growing.

The MCT with the support of a city based NGO Animal Care Land (ACL) took up the birth control programme and anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs in the city in April this year to contain the menace of stray dogs in the streets.

The ACL developed a mobile app for the corporation to have the complete details of the stray dogs, including sterilised and vaccinated, in the city through online by geo-tagging the dogs. This was also to ensure transparency in the animal birth control programme and vaccination of stray dogs which is going in the city and also for public information.

According to TMC Commissioner V Vinay Chand, the geo-tagging of stray dogs helped to know the exact number of stray dogs, sex wise, and also about their sterilisation, street wise to implement the birth control and anti-rabies vaccination programme effectively to contain dogs menace in the city.

Vinay Chand said that the sterilisation and vaccination of 72 per cent of the about 10,000 street dogs in the city was over and the birth control and vaccination of remaining stray dogs will be completed by July-end.

ACL founder president and veterinarian Srikanth said that the details of the stray dogs including the date of sterilisation and vaccination also included in the mobile app which will be useful for the corporation to evolve plans to tackle the stray dogs menace, in future also.
He said that the animal birth control and vaccination programme of stray dogs is now going on vigorously throughout the State thanks to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu initiative.

Naidu directed all the 110 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) including corporations and municipalities to put an end to the stray dog menace. Accordingly, the 13 districts were divided into 27 clusters for the execution of stray dog sterilisation programmes with the financial support of the respective civic bodies.

The ACL is conducting the programme in 10 clusters in Chittoor, Kadapa, Nellore, Prakasam and Guntur districts and Vijayawada city while the remaining are spearheaded by various NGOs with the financial support of respective civic bodies.

Srikanth said that AP has become the role model for other States in adopting latest techniques for the control of stray dogs while the facilities in the ACL here has become a model in birth control and vaccination for stray dogs.

The model is now being extended to statewide, he added. He said that the ACL brought doctors from Kerala to increase the number of sterilisation being done daily in the clusters so as to cover all the dogs in one or two months. There are 1.79 lakh stray dogs in the 13 districts of the State, he said.
