Pattikonda (Kurnool): As viral fevers have been taking a toll in the village, residents of Pandikona in the mandal have turned to various rituals as the diseases show no signs of abatement.

On account of prevailing unhygienic conditions and sewer water getting mixed up with the drinking water pipeline, viral fevers broke out in the village and claimed lives of two persons in the last 10 days.

As a result, at least 200 villagers were down with viral fevers and approaching various hospitals for treatment. The villagers have been blaming dereliction of duty on the part of government medical officers and village panchayat in upkeep of sanitation.

Besides availing treatment, the villagers have been performing various rituals out of superstitions. They were offering pujas to Laal Swamy and Kasim Swamy and also to Goddesses Sunkulamma, Maremma and other Goddesses.

The villagers were also lighting incense powder in front of their homes and taking out a procession armed with knives and making strange sounds like ‘Dheen..Dheen’ on the outskirts of the village.

Afterwards, they were burying piglets alive in all four directions of the village. Once the ritual is completed, the hard and fast rule is that women and children should not cross the path of villagers returning home.

The people of the village were in the grip of fear psychosis as the viral fevers were not showing any signs of abatement. The villagers have been appealing to district officials to save them from viral fevers.
