Vijayawada: The State government will be initiating steps to establish a Regional Institute of Mental Health in Tirupati, informed Minister for Health and Medical Education Kamineni Srinivas. He inaugurated Andhra Pradesh Psychiatrists Conference (APPSYCON-2016) here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamineni said that the State had lost Erragadda Institute of Mental Health to Telangana and the Visakhapatnam Metal hospital was the only option.

People of Rayalaseema region will find it difficult to travel all the way to Visakhapatnam and in the wake of this we have decided to set up a Regional Mental Hospital in Tirupati,” he asserted.

Responding to a request made by psychiatrists association on a bill brought by Union government to prohibit electric shock treatment without anaesthesia to mentally-ill patients, the Minister said he would take the issue to the notice of Union Health Ministry.

He asked the psychiatrists to strive to create awareness among the people on common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Indian Psychiatry Society (IPS) State president Dr G Suresh Kumar felt that there was a need for two more regional mental hospitals in the state apart from nursing homes and rehabilitation centres.APPSYCON organising committee chairman Dr Indla Ramasubba Reddy and others experts also spoke.
