Amalapuram: People of island villages in Konaseema region are living in the grip of fear as 14 lakh cusecs are being discharged from Dowleswaram barrage because of floods to River Godavari.

However, children are travelling to schools by boats due to the causeways at Ainavilli mandal are under flood water affecting road communications among the island villages.

In the mandal, Veeravallipalem, Addankivarilanka, Ainavillilanka and Pottilanka are marooned. The condition of other island villages like Burugulanka and Udumudilanka and other villages is no better. In Mamidikuduru mandal, Appannapalli causeway got submerged affecting road communications among four adjacent villages.

For the past two days the flood waters enveloped the island villages and the intensity of floods is likely to continue for four more days.

All vegetable gardens submerged under the flood water. The farmers are apprehensive of the gardens destroyed fully in an exent of 10,000 acres if the flood waters did not recede immediately.

However, there is one positive side of the floods. The floods are bringing the nutrient-rich and fertile red soil along with it and depositing it in coconut gardens improving the crop prospects manifold. While the floods poured cold water on vegetable farmers’ aspirations, brought cheers to the coconut farmers.
