Rajamahendravaram: Former Amalapuram MP GV Harsha Kumar on Tuesday called upon all dalits, irrespective of sub-sect, to assemble for a rally at Vemagiri High School grounds here on July 16 to condemn the desecration of Dr Ambedkar’s statues indiscriminately at different places in East Godavari district and police inaction.

Addressing a media conference here along with several dalit leaders, he said that an Ambedkar statue was shifted from Madigapeta of the Dommeru village to the Panchayat office after upper caste people objected to install the same.

He demanded that the government re-install the statue in the same Madigapeta and punish the police who had failed to take action against leaders of upper castes.

He recalled that desecration of Dr Ambedkar statues in East Godavari district have been increasing during the last two months. Such incidents were reported from Ganti-Pallipalem, Draksharamam, Gangavaram, Kapavaram, Kuyyeru and Masakapalli villages.
