Tirupati: State Information Commissioner P Vijay Babu observed that the higher officials are apathetic in implementing the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

At a two-day regional-level meeting which concluded here on Saturday, Vijay Babu took up the pending RTI applications pertaining to corporations, municipalities, District Water Management Agency (DWMA) and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) of Rayalaseema and Nellore districts.

In all, 70 pending cases in five districts were reviewed in the two-day hearing in which Information Commissioner ordered to issue show cause notice to two officials including the Commissioner of Kadapa Municipal Corporation and Kalayadurg Municipal Commissioner for their failure to attend the review meeting here.

Speaking to the media, Vijay Babu said that most of the officials deputing lower rung staff to attend the meeting revealing the negligence which will not be tolerated. The PIOs should attend the meeting and cooperate with the Information Commission to dispose the pending applications seeking information on various matters, he added. Implementing RTI Act effectively is rather imperative to ensure transparency in government administration, he said and sought the support of media, voluntary organisations and citizens concerned for creating awareness about the RTI Act.
