Anakapalli (Visakhapatnam): B Kondal who is working relentlessly on issues of farmers’ suicides in AP and Telangana has been conferred with the Basha Memorial Award for the year 2015-16 at a programme organised at Vivekananda Hall here on Sunday. Kondal has been Rs 25,000 cash prize along with award. This was the fifth consecutive year of the award presentation. Chief guest Prof Haragopal, noted civil rights activist, attributed the reason for farmers suicides to the liberalisation policies adopted by various governments.

Governments caught in the web of World Bank loans were compromising on the rural sovereignty resulting in distress among rural masses and value degradation in society. The value degradation was indirectly leading to communal disturbances and violence against women, he said.

Chakradhar Buddha, convener of Samalochana who presided over the meeting, said generally youth from upper caste and upper classes were projected as role models where as youth belonging to SC/STs and BCs were ignored completely. The award aims at recognising the work of young people who were involved in rights-based work and strengthening people’s democracy. The key objective of the award was to introduce young role models to larger society and also to express solidarity with their work.
