Nellore: Hyderabad-based Aarvee Associates has completed preparation of the Detailed Project Report as part of rejuvenation of Nellore Cheruvu under the National Lake Conservation plan. It was proposed to give a facelift to the tank obstructing sewerage from drains into the tank as per guidelines of the NRCD. Bara Shahid Dargah and several colonies have come up along Swarnala Cheruvu, popularly known as Nellore Tank, over the years.

Due to huge influx of population along the bund, pollution has been increasing as the drains were flowing into the water body damaging its environs. The municipal administration department, which planned a facelift to the tank, engaged Aarvee Associates of Hyderabad for preparing a detailed project report. Treatment of sewerage coming from drains, plans for the development of lake front, generation of revenue for maintenance of the tank and standards of pollution to be maintained have been incorporated in the report, according to sources.

In fact, the project has been considering assistance from the Central government under the National Plan for Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA). Earlier, there were two centrally sponsored schemes such as the National Wetland Conservation Programme (NWCP) and the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) and now both have been merged in 2013 and named as NPCA.

The State government has planned to utilise the funds under the NPCA for improving conditions of the tank for making it as an important tourism spot in the town. The objective of the scheme is to restore and conserve the urban and semi-urban lakes of the country which were degraded due to waste water discharge into the water bodies.

The National River Conservation Directorate, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India has suggested to maintain levels of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) total suspended solids in the waste water through proper treatment.

The oxygen utilisation in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) test is caused by microbial metabolism, the rate of utilisation is similarly affected by the temperature. Total suspended solids (TSS) is a water quality parameter used for example to assess the quality of waste water after treatment in a treatment plant. As part of this programme, the pollution levels in tank water and treatment of waste water being flown into the water body would be regulated besides managing healthy atmosphere in the tank area. From this apart, levels of faecal coliform through MPN method have to be done, according to a senior official.
