Kakinada: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is encouraging banks to promote farmers’ clubs in 60 mandals of delta, upland and Agency areas.

Such clubs were organised by the rural branches of banks with the support and financial assistance of NABARD for the mutual benefit of the banks and farmers.

These clubs would coordinate with banks to ensure credit flow among its members and forge better bank-borrower relationship, conduct extension programmes, liaison with input suppliers to purchase bulk inputs on behalf of members, and organise joint activities like value addition, processing and collective farm produce marketing for the benefit of members.

  • The primary objective of the initiative is to ensure development in the rural areas through credit, technology transfer, awareness and capacity-building
  • The clubs will facilitate the transfer of latest agriculture techniques and help farmers enhance the output of various crops

It may be mentioned here that as a part of farmers’ club programme, the district was divided into three zones and clubs totalling 45 were formed in Kakinada, 75 in Amalapuram, 20 in Rajamahendravaram and 20 in seven Agency mandals.

The NABARD would provide a financial assistance of Rs 10,000 to each club per annum for three years.

The club members were expected to utilise this amount to meet routine expenses for formation, maintenance, and organising awareness meets.
These clubs were informal groups of farmers formed to propagate the principle of ‘Development Through Credit' which emphasised the need for usage of credit effectively in a most scientific manner to increase agriculture production.

These clubs would conduct meetings and send reports to the NABARD periodically.

All clubs should have savings bank account with the sponsoring bank. All villagers except wilful loan defaulters could become members.

The technical sessions would also be conducted to farmers by principal scientists or coordinators at Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Kalavacharla in Rajamahendravaram suburbs and Dr Y S R Horticultural University at Tadepalligudem.
