Hyderabad: The MIM on Tuesday urged the Andhra Pradesh government to stop demolition of religious structures in the name of road-widening.

Demanding action against erring officials involved in demolition of centuries-old Abu Bakr Mosque at Ramavarappadu on Vijayawada-Eluru Ring Road on May 15, the party asked the government to withdraw notices for demolition of other mosques, dargahs and graveyards in Vijayawada city and on its outskirts in the name of development.

A delegation led by Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri met Chief Secretary of AP, Satya Prakash Tucker, on Tuesday seeking rebuilding of Abu Bakr mosque at the same spot.

They alleged that local authorities, with the active backing of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation and police commissionerate, were resorting to arbitrary demolition of mosques, dargahs and graveyards in violation of norms.

The Majlis leaders said that the authorities had not only ignored the protests by members of Muslim community, but also ignored the pleas of AP State Wakf Board.

“The Abu Bakr mosque was bulldozed along with its material as well as the copies of the Holy Quran and other religious books.

Despite vociferous protests by the local Muslims and district Wakf Board functionaries, they went ahead with demolition. Ironically, the police foisted cases against the local Muslims for protesting,” they pointed out.

Quadri recalled that earlier, MIM had represented this matter to the State government in May, but no action was initiated.

On the other hand, the Revenue department was going ahead with their moves to demolish other mosques and graveyards as part of widening of the highway and construction of flyover with four tracks.

“The Revenue authorities are trying to forcibly acquire the land and demolish the Dargah Hazrat Syed Hussain Shah Quadri and the adjoining mosque for the flyover works.

Already, the guest rooms, wazu khana and toilets in the dargah and mosque complex have been demolished. Similarly, attempts are being made by the revenue authorities to acquire and demolish the Jama Masjid,” said MIM leaders.
