District admin decides to boost apiculture

Eluru: West Godavari district Collector K Bhaskar directed the horticulture officials to prepare a comprehensive plan to encourage the production of honey to give higher income to the farmers in the district.
He reviewed the progress of horticulture at a meeting on Wednesday. The Collector said that a new technology has been introduced for higher production of honey and asked the officials to encourage farmers to take up honey bee breeding in orchids for additional income.

The Collector also issued instructions for implementing drip irrigation in 50,000 hectares of oil palm orchids by March, 2017. He asked officials to encourage the cultivation of banana, cocoa, orange and guava besides maize and coconut.
He instructed officials to spend the funds allotted to the horticulture department by September and added that he would raise additional funds if required to turn the district into a model for the State.
Horticulture Deputy Director YVS Prasad, Assistant Directors Durgesh, Vijayalakshmi, Micro Irrigation Project Director Rammohan Rao and others participated in the review meeting.
