Vizianagaram: Roadside liquor shops are the main reason behind the rise of accidents on National Highways, according to a committee headed by Justice K S Radhakrishnan. The committee which was constituted by the Union government toured Vizianagaram and other districts in the State and found that drunken driving was the main reason for large number of accidents.

The committee also found that accidents involving two wheelers was because bikers were not wearing helmets and also talking over phone while driving, leading to accidents. According to official sources, around 1,600 shops are there between Itchapuram in Srikakulam district and Tada in Nellore district.

Around 100 shops both legal and illegal are selling liquor near National Highways in Vizianagaram district.The sources said even the Lorry Owners Association of Andhra Pradesh had appealed to State government to remove the liquor shops which are adjacent to the national highways but the excise department failed to take action since they earn good revenues from these shops.

Talking to The Hans India G V Ramana Rao, Vice president of AP lorry owners association said The toll plazas are collecting thousands of rupees as toll tax from the trucks.

But they are not providing basic amenities like rest rooms and the government is not maintaining enough mobile squad teams to respond quickly after getting the information regarding accidents and even the ambulances are also not available on National Highways, resulting in the rise of deaths in road accidents,” he said.

Ch Das, Assistant Excise superintendent of Palasa in Srikakulam district said “We are taking measures to reduce roadside liquor shops and trying to implement the guidelines given by the government. Protecting lives is more important than adding revenues to the treasury,” he added.

Apart from that AP government has registered 20.75 Lakh cases and collected Rs.44.69 crores as penalty during 2015-16 and in 2016 police have registered around 14 Lakh cases by June and collected around Rs.16 Crores towards penalty from the vehicular.

During 2015-16 around 8300 have lost their lives in Andhra Pradesh in 24,258 accidents and the number of accidents may increase in the current year.
