Green tribunal serves notices on AP, Telangana
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued notice to the Environmental Ministry here on Monday, seeking its reply to the petition of Rela, an NGO, on alleged illegal clearances given to Polavaram. The tribunal also served notices on Polavaram Authority and the State governments of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
New Delhi: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued notice to the Environmental Ministry here on Monday, seeking its reply to the petition of Rela, an NGO, on alleged illegal clearances given to Polavaram. The tribunal also served notices on Polavaram Authority and the State governments of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
The tribunal took up the hearing on Monday and adjourned the case to October 3. Rela contended in the petition that Polavaram Project was an environmental hazard and the clearances given to the Project by the Centre and the Environmental Ministry were against the norms.
It said these clearances had been accorded under political pressure and without taking into consideration the impact the project would have not only on the environment but also on the tribals’ livelihood.
