Woman’s bid to set daughter-in-law ablaze
A woman’s attempt to set her pregnant daughter-in-law ablaze highlights the fact that discrimination against the girl child continues unabated even now. Though the ghastly incident took place at G Kandriga in Muthukur mandal on August 20, it came to light on Tuesday.

According to information, Tandra Srinivasulu of G Kandriga married N Girija of Thotapalli Gudur on August 14, 2014. Theirs was a happy married life till the recent past. The couple has a baby girl. Girija’s mother-in-law Lakshmi Kanthamma and sister-in-law Subhashini started harassing her seeking more dowry.
Girija used to bear the harassment of her in-laws silently. In the meantime, she became pregnant again. Having learnt about her pregnancy, Lakshmi Kanthamma consulted a soothsayer who predicted that Girija would give birth to a female child again.
Believing the soothsayer’s prediction, Lakshmi Kanthamma along with Subhashini started pestering Girija to undergo abortion as she did not want a baby girl again. Girija refused to undergo abortion and Srinivasulu tried to persuade his mother against commitment of female foeticide.
Lakshmi Kanthamma who remained silent for the time being, waited for an opportunity and attempted to set Girija on fire on August 20 after pouring acid and kerosene on her stomach while she was sleeping. Srinivasulu was not at home at that time. On hearing the cries of Girija, neighbours came to her rescue.
They called 108 ambulance and informed the matter to Girija’s parents. Later, they took Girija to Muthukur police station after a futile wait for the ambulance. Citing that all the police personnel were attending Pushkaram duties, the cops manning the station refused to register a case based on a complaint by Girija. They asked those who accompanied Girija to take her to a private hospital. Later, she was admitted to a private hospital.
Though Girija made a fresh complaint after the incident, no case was registered against her mother-in-law.
