Tirupati: The city has good sports facilities like indoor stadia, courts for badminton, tennis, kabaddi, kho-kho, cricket etc. It also has good playgrounds and physical education directors. But, development of sports remains a distant dream as there are no sufficient coaches to tap and train the young talent.

Though Srinivasa Sports Complex (SSC) is a government sports complex, its facilities are limited to only those who pay for using the facilities. The facilities that are available here including the courts for volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, swimming and skating rink are free only to recognised State and national players.

Though there is weight-lifting platform in SSC but it remains unutilised as it does not have proper equipment or a coach. In all, there are six coaches--three SAAP employees and three engaged by SSC and 11 sub-staff. But, the problem is that there are no facilities for sports which have coaches and there are no coaches for which facilities are available.

Recently, a coach for kabaddi and kho-kho at Chittoor sports stadium was transferred to Nellore but he managed to get it cancelled and got posted in SSC where there is no kabaddi and kho-kho courts.

Chittoor is left with no coach for kabaddi and kho-kho though it is having the courts while SSC is having the coach but no facility for kho-kho. As of now, a total of 200 sports enthusiasts are utilising some of the facilities on regular basis in which swimming alone accounts for 75 and badminton-50.

SSC administrative officer Varalakshmi said that the sports complex is struggling for its maintenance due to the burden of power bill which is about Rs 90,000 per month as against its revenue of Rs 1.1 to 1.2 lakh.

Apart from the power charges, we have to meet the salary of three coaches and 11 staff,” she averred. If the government provides free power supply or at least at subsidised rate, then the stadium will get the much needed fillip, she said.

In Chittoor, stadium has 400 metres running track, kho-kho, basketball, volleyball and Kabbadi courts which are made available free of cost, except for the swimming pool but there are no takers for these facilities.
