With the expanded resources, the IISER has now resolved to extend it outreach programmes which envisage to enhance the scientific knowledge of students, particularly from the underprivileged at school level and to motivate them to take up courses in basic sciences like Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for higher education and research.

Tirupati: The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) here is all set to take up outreach programmes for the benefit of local school students. The IISER which was set up in March, 2015 is already allowing bright students from colleges and universities here based on their academic performance to the seminars and other programmes being held in the institution and also thrown open its laboratories, having advanced facilities for researchers and students of the local universities and colleges as part of its outreach programme.

With the expanded resources, the IISER has now resolved to extend it outreach programmes which envisage to enhance the scientific knowledge of students, particularly from the underprivileged at school level and to motivate them to take up courses in basic sciences like Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for higher education and research.

An official of the national-level institution confided that the students studying in the five-year integrated BS-MS course, who were selected at national-level based on merit and who are capable of explaining science lessons to the school students, will be involved in the social initiative.

Utilising them will be beneficial to improve the performance of school students in Science and Mathematics and also to expand their knowledge and vision.

Speaking to The Hans India, the official said the students are admitted to IISER from three channels – JEE entrance test and IISER aptitude test conducted for the merit students of Plus Two or Higher Secondary in the State and from the students selected for Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Students with KVPY fellowship studying at IISER, get scholarship from DST while for other students selected through JEE and IISER aptitude test, the IISER will recommend them for scholarship to DST, based on merit, he said.

He said that Tirupati institution with 129 students including first and second year BS-MS and with a faculty strength of 22 is fully resourceful to take up outreach programmes. The IISER students as part of the outreach programme guide the school students in conducting simple science experiments and will showcase the experiments of basic sciences, he explained.

On the construction of own building at Yerpedu mandal where the government had allocated 250-acre land, he said soon a detailed project report will be prepared and will be sent to Ministry of Finance for approval after which the construction work will be taken up. The Tirupati IISER will be the largest as it has 250-acre campus, among the seven IISERs, he added.
