Nellore: The pressure cooker bomb blast which occurred on Tuesday on the premises of the Nellore Court has put the police personnel of the district on high alert. Free of any such incidents in the recent past, the district has understandably been jolted by the happening.
Police officials suspect the blast to be the handiwork of extremists or Maoists as it seemed to be a meticulously planned operation.

Only these groups are known to use IED in such a systematic way. Besides, for quite some time now, Nellore has been a transit zone for Maoists and terrorist groups shuttling between Hyderabad and Bangalore, according to a senior official of the elite Greyhounds wing. Police officials were relieved that there were no casualties despite the use of deadly material like iron balls, ammonium phosphate and dry batteries in making the IED.

Central Counter Intelligence and Intelligence Bureau officials visited the spot on Tuesday and collected evidence. They interacted with local police officials and obtained details from them on the nature of incident. The collected some samples and took photographs at the spot.

It may be recalled that the dog squad and bomb disposal squads had also collected samples on Monday evening. They had found ammonium phosphate and other material along with cable and dry batteries used for the blast. The intelligence teams are comparing the incident with similar instances which had occurred in Chittoor, Mysore and Kollam in the past.

Police as of now seem to be more inclined to the Maoist angle as the district witnessed an orgy of violence in the past in the conflict between the State and Maoists.

The last major incident was in 2007 when former Chief Minister Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy and his wife escaped a landmine blast triggered by Maoists near Kota mandal headquarters.

Senior police officials admit that Nellore is still a sleeper zone where activities are taken up covertly. “Nellore has been a shelter zone for some years and we cannot afford to ignore this particular incident. Although Nellore has been relatively incident-free since 2007, such incidents prove the need to stay on the alert all the time,” said a senior Greyhounds officer.
