Visakhapatnam: Rains continued to create havoc in the district and surroundings for the third day on Tuesday. The death toll remained 10 and no more loss of life or injuries were reported from any part of the district.

All the low-lying areas continued to remain under sheet of storm water and only in few parts the water receded, according to the revenue officials. The rains affected the rail and road movement and huge boulders crashed on the Kothavalasa-Kirondol rail track in the day completely stalling the rail movement in the sector.

“We are expecting more rains for the next two days and alerted the officials,” District Collector Praveen Kumar said while watching the situation from the newly-opened Command Control Centre in the Collectorate.

He said many areas were inundated in S Rayavaram, Rambilli, Paykaraopeta and Nakkapalle mandals which received maximum rainfall during the last three days. Special officers are leading teams to evacuate the people to relief camps. So far nine relief camps were set up and 6,600 people were shifted.

Raiwada reservoir filled the maximum level and 2,668 cusecs of water was released on Tuesday.

Regarding damage to the crops, the Collector said Anakapalle, Devarapalle, K Kotapadu, Paykaraopeta and Nakkapalle suffered the most with water submerging crops in 6,930 hectares.

Revenue and agriculture officials are visiting the farms to assess the damages. Even drones are being used to find the losses, the Collector said. Around 459 houses suffered damages, 41 ponds were breached and 14 bridges, causeways and culverts were damaged. Similarly, R&B roads to the extent of 268 km were damaged. An amount of Rs 7.38 crore was sanctioned for temporary repairs and Rs 47.84 crore for permanent restoration.

An amount of Rs 58 lakh was sanctioned to ponds and Rs 3.15 crore for permanent repairs, the Collector said.

Similarly, an amount of Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia would be given to family of each of the10 persons who lost their lives in the floods.

He said all the special teams were in the field and people could approach them for relief.
