Visakhapatnam: The State unit of BJP has decided to be cautious in having an alliance with the ruling Telugu Desam Party for the municipal and Legislative Council elections slated towards end of this year.

Briefing the media after the party State executive meeting held here on Saturday, State general secretary of the party Jammula Syam Kishore and vice-president Suresh Reddy said the party would increase its strength by going for membership drive and building cadre in all the mandals so as to become a formidable force for the local elections and council polls.

Syam Kishore said in-charges have been appointed for the constituencies where the council polls would be held and there would a hectic campaign on the sops announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the State since bifurcation.

Asked about the alliance with TDP since some BJP units have already announced that they would contest in all the wards in Municipal Corporation polls, Suresh Reddy said local leaders would have no powers for taking decisions on the tie-up or going alone.

“The BJP high command and TDP headquarters will take a decision which would be binding on the local leaders,’’ Suresh Reddy said. Answering a question on how the party would face people when Special Status was denied and separate railway zone remained pending, the State leaders said the Central government had sanctioned several projects worth Rs 2.2 lakh crore, which could benefit the State more than the Special Status.

Similarly, the Centre will also soon announce the railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters. “The BJP membership in 2014 was 1.75 lakh and now it swelled to 30 lakh in two-andhalf years, which indicates that the people have trust in the party,’’

Syam Kishore said. Earlier in the day-long executive committee meeting, the State party members passed a resolution thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning special package to Andhra Pradesh. BJP State president and local MP Dr K Haribabu and party AP in-charge Siddharth Nath Singh were present.
